DEPTH OF FIELD

The distance in front of and behind the subject that appears to be in focus and can be altered by changing the camera’s aperture. The wider the aperture, the shorter the depth of field, and vice versa.

DIGITAL CAMERA
-
A camera that uses a sensor to capture photographic images and then converts them to digital format. See also CCD, CMOS, SENSOR.

DIGITAL ZOOM

Simulates the effect of an optical zoom lens by enlarging a part of a digital image and cropping out the extra information. The result is a picture with bigger pixels and therefore poorer image quality.

DIRECT PHOTO PRINTING

The ability to print directly from your camera or memory card without having to use a computer.

DOCKING STATION

An accessory that connects a digital camera to a computer to transfer images.

DOWNLOAD

To transfer a file to your computer, e.g., from another computer, a digital camera or the Internet. The opposite of UPLOAD.

DPI
-
Dots Per Inch. A measurement of image resolution. The more dots per inch, the higher the quality of an image.

DRIVER
-
A piece of software that allows a computer and its operating system to communicate with an internal or external peripheral, e.g. sound or video card, printer, scanner, digital camera.
