SATURATION
-
The intensity of a colour. The less intense the colour, the closer it is to gray. See also GRAYSCALE.

SCANNER
-
A device that converts paper documents into digital files and images. See also FLATBED SCANNER and ALL-IN-ONE

SD Card
-
Secure Digital Card. A type of flash memory card used in digital cameras and other small electronic devices. See also FLASH MEMORY.

SELF-TIMER MODE
-
A feature that sets a delay before a camera takes a picture so that the photographer can get into the picture.

SEPIA
-
A kind of monochrome photograph with a reddish brown tint. See also MONOCHROME and BLACK & WHITE.

SHARPENING
-
To enhance the boundaries between objects and tones in an image to give a more focused appearance. The opposite of SMOOTHING

SHARPNESS
-
The degree to which an image appears to be in focus.

SHUTTER
-
A mechanical door that opens and closes to allow light to enter a camera.

SHUTTER RELEASE
-
The button, usually on top of a camera, that one presses to take a picture.

SHUTTER SPEED
-
The time that a camera’s shutter stays open. Expressed in fractions of a second. The higher the shutter speed, the shorter the time the shutter stays open

SLR
-
Single Lens Reflex. A type of camera that uses a mirror to enable the user to look through the lens and see what is being photographed. Most SLR cameras use interchangeable lenses for even more versatility.

SMOOTHING
-
To blur the boundaries between objects and tones in an image to remove rough or jagged edges.

SPORTS MODE (SETTING)
-
A mode that optimizes camera settings to capture subjects in motion.

STOP
-
1. The width of a camera’s aperture. 2. A doubling or halving of a camera’s exposure. Changing the aperture by one setting doubles or halves the exposure. Changing the shutter from one setting to another does the same thing. See also APPERTURE, BRACKETING, EXPOSURE, F-STOP and SHUTTER SPEED.
