TELEPHOTO

A lens with a very long focal length that magnifies and brings the subject being photographed closer. See also FOCAL LENGTH, ZOOM LENS.

THUMBNAIL

A miniature, low-resolution version of a digital image used for cataloguing and previewing purposes.

TIFF
-
Tagged Image File Format. A high quality lossless digital image format. Because files are not compressed, they take up a lot more space than JPEGs, but they are of much higher quality. See also JPEG, RAW.

TIME LAPSE

A series of photographs of the same subject taken from a fixed position at fixed intervals over a period of time. These images can then be presented as a series or can be superimposed. See also MUTLIPLE EXPOSURE.

TRIPOD

An adjustable, usually collapsible three-legged support used to steady a camera and reduce shake when taking pictures with prolonged exposure times or during low-light conditions. See also MONOPOD.

TTL

Through The Lens. Electronic metering feature that measures the amount of ambient and electronic light through the lens. It is used mostly to control flash timing and exposure.

TWAIN

Technology Without An Interesting Name. A protocol for retrieving image data from scanners, used to create drivers for scanners. See also FLATBED SCANNER, SCANNER.
